Cabinets.

The ones providing retractability are a wonderful option when available. Once opened, the unit is clear and fully reachable, with no barrier in the way. Effortlessly enhancing the ability to find whatever it is we are looking for.

Easy Reach.

If lower units are not an option, consider installing shelving lifts inside regular cabinets. With handles to lower the shelf and its contents within the unit. Those are fantastic additions for accessible kitchens when it comes to storage and utility. And all over the house, for that matter. Although they do require some hands-on installation and might mean a more in-depth reno. Hardware should be easy to seize and comfortable to the hand. Using pulls is recommended rather than knobs. And levers are great on doors of all kinds.

Open Shelving.

Otherwise, open shelving is great and very easy to access. Think about using some of those shelves to display great pieces that will make you happy on a day-to-day basis. And for the convenience of quickly grabbing items frequently used. They are also great for accessing your essentials when cognitive challenges can impede closing and opening cupboards and drawers. But having open shelves means that their contents are basically open to the elements and therefore much more prone to dust if your house tends to gather dust. When your source of heat is forced air, for example, or if you have pets. Or if your household is rather busy, a lot of going and coming from the outdoors. And yes, this is also true for those of us who are rather reluctant dusters… In those cases, open shelving can become tricky and a real piece of work.

Categorizing.

It is always best to gather pantry items and cooking supplies by genre. If you have a breakfast nook, try to incorporate some accessible storage close by. To gather those cereal boxes, bowls, a few glasses, a few spoons and anything you would use in the morning on a regular basis. Holding those essentials there will help for smooth daily operations and will make for a great start to the day. By the stove, the same principle applies. A great place to gather pots, pans, stirring spoons, spices etc. Anything that would be essentially used in this specific area so there is not as much come and go carrying things around.

As for cookware, pots, pans and other essentials should be made of materials reflecting the needs and restrictions of the entire household. For individuals suffering from arthritis or having mobility issues, lighter materials with sturdy handles should be preferred. Size should reflect the quantity of portions prepared and the frequency of use.

Clutter No More.

Gadgets and accessories should be kept to a minimum in your storage and utility spaces as to not overwhelm the space and lose too much functionality with clutter. Remember that a good quality knife will handle most of the peeling, cutting, chopping and prepping. While a simple and well designed wooden spoon will take care of the mixing, stirring, smashing and smoothing gracefully. It is also good to think outside the box. For example, a good pair of scissors will do wonders in tackling many different tasks, like chopping lettuce, mincing chives, cutting up onions, detailing meat even, you name it. And it is a pretty safe way to handle those sometimes slippery preps.

Quality Of Life.

Universal design may be necessary down the road and will greatly ease our difficulties when having to face life-changing situations if we ever have to be confronted to them. But, truth be told, universal design will improve our reality right here, right now. Even if we do not have any restrictions at the present time. So there really is nothing to lose in thinking the space ingenuously frontward.

A universal kitchen is a flexible space where a lot will happen within a predetermined square footage. There is no need to expand the space per se to have a more open feel and a better functioning station. It just has to be well thought. Using the kitchen should be simple and maneuverable. It should be intuitive and designed to give us all the same ability to evolve. Properly designed to give us all the same chance to be independent and take part in meal prepping. Using the kitchen should be joyful and something to look forward to.

Universal Kitchens : Countertops And Work Surfaces.

By thinking ahead and setting up a universal kitchen to best fit our needs in the long term, we can enhance our experience in the kitchen and address accessibility issues or other challenges we might be confronted with at one point or another. Providing countertops and work surfaces to meet everyone’s needs will greatly improve every day’s functionality and enjoyment in the kitchen.

Meeting Everyone’s Needs.

Countertops and work surfaces present a challenge to accessible kitchens. Why ? Simple. One single countertop simply cannot accommodate everyone to the best extent possible when it comes to a diverse household, as far as height and specific needs are concerned. So how do we address this ? By providing an assortment of countertops and work surfaces within the space whenever possible. They do not need to be overly spacious, but having a variety will make things so much easier.

Exploring New Heights.

To be considered accessible, countertops and work surfaces shall be no higher than 34 inches and provide clearance underneath. At an ideal height of 28 inches, they can accommodate wheelchairs comfortably. A 30″ to 32″ counter is actually a perfect height for anyone standing to perform power tasks such as kneading dough or rolling pastries. Those of us who are slightly shorter than the average size will benefit from wearing indoor shoes to slightly elevate their forearms in comparison with the counter level. Or having a stool readily available under the counter really helps as well. A useful accessory indeed, but make sure it can be safely tucked under so it does not become a tripping hazard when not in use.

Clearing Space.

As mentioned above, free space underneath the counters shall be provided. This is to welcome the wheelchair easily, moving in and out as needed. No less than 24 inches in height and 30 inches wide. Now, this will not be the most efficient height for most standing individuals as we greatly vary in size. And this is where adjustable counters are a great option to best accommodate everyone. Although they require some work to be installed, i.e. renovations involved. Which might, or might not, be an option for some of us. 

Diversity Is Key.

So if adjustable countertops are not an option, we go back to the basics. Keep in mind that a standard height counter at 36 inches will greatly improve versatility for multifunction families. Displaying standard countertops and work surfaces at different locations within the kitchen will allocate enough workspace for the whole family to cook together while providing the best comfort possible for everyone’s needs and restrictions. 

Finishes.

Counters shall have rounded edges and be made from solid surfaces that will age well without necessitating heavy maintenance. If the budget is tight, consider waiting a little longer while saving extra to splurge on a piece that will last with no downside. No need to break the bank either. Some great eco-friendly products are on the local market nowadays, no need to order a solid marble slab from overseas. Quartz and stainless steel work surfaces, for example, are great options and will go a long way, super durable and easy on maintenance.

Island Living.

An island is a must, space permitting. Used as work table, serving table, storage unit, gathering place during social outings, homework station etc. An island is easily the most used work surface in the house. If an island is not possible because of your floor plan, square footage or else, a roll-in trolley will serve the exact same purpose but without the commitment on the floor. Its ability to be moved from one place to the other, and from room to room, can be a great advantage for service as well during events.

Accessories.

Think about your habits in the kitchen and define what are your most used tools. And what challenges have to be faced on a regular basis. Chopping boards, for example, are essential. But they can be very difficult to operate when faced with physical impairments. Chopping boards should be made of materials that are easy to clean. Providing a special place on your countertops and work surfaces to snugly accommodate a removable chopping board will make a world of difference. A thin grid pattern of spikes can be used in combination with a pre-perforated wooden shopping board. Once in place, the spikes will slightly protrude from the cutting board to help keep the food in place when being chopped. Almost like having an extra hand on hand. And when the job is done, slide off the chopping board from its spikes to wash as needed.

Having an honest look at what we need and what we find difficult to perform when it comes to simple tasks around the kitchen, or around the house for that matter, will help us define what we need to improve and how we can make our days more enjoyable. 

An accessible kitchen is a space where we all belong. Where we feel welcome to come and go as we wish. Where we are invited to take part in the activities happening there. A common space providing everyone with the ability to take part in the joy of prepping and cooking. We prepare meals, not because we have to, but because it is a meaningful activity to share, to help us be creative and to push our boundaries. Introducing Universal Design Into Our Kitchen : Function Before Fashion.

Kitchens have greatly evolved over the ages, mainly due to our social habits and the design trends we follow. But timeless kitchens flow through time without a wrinkle to spare. They have a way to age gracefully while not losing one bit of functionality. Not only are they hard working, but they look the part as well. So how to achieve and integrate into our interiors the ultimate cooking space that will last for years to come ? Easy. By introducing universal design into our kitchen.

Functional Space.

A kitchen does not need to be big to be perfect. When it comes to cooking space, functionality is key. It should provide the ability to operate with independence and freedom. And with minimum effort involved. So, designing the room by breaking it down into areas of use will be the answer to an efficient space.

Immediate storage to set plates and cups as we empty the dishwasher or finish up the dishes. Pans and pots handily displayed by the stove. Horizontal surfaces of varying heights to accommodate everyone in the family who is taking part in the prepping and cooking. A pantry to store everyday’s essentials. Simple things like that will go a long way.

Looking Back To Look Forward.

Looking at how heritage houses were designed originally, it is interesting to see that kitchen were not especially large when it came to square footage. An enclosed space with a trusty stove generally took up most of the space. The said stove was also a—if not the only—source of heat. Which was acting as temperature control for the sleeping quarters above. A comfortable, cost-efficient and clever way to keep the heat source working its magic to the maximum.

Old kitchens had a sink to take care of the dishes, although a direct source of water was not necessarily readily available, depending of the construction. It usually meant having to go outside to collect water in the well, and then bringing it in.

Cold storage underneath the house held supplies of root veggies and other less perishable products in a controlled environment. Ice houses could be found outside in fancier dwellings, and were considered luxury. But the kitchen would generally accommodate a pantry to store readily available food products. And a sturdy multipurpose table was inevitably reigning within the space. Used for everything from kneading bread, chopping vegetables and cooling down meals.

The Perfect Triangle.

To this day, and through all sorts of trends punctuating our view of this essential space to any dwelling, the perfect triangle keeps being the one pattern that will work for all of us, no matter what our habits are. No matter how much emphasis we put on the kitchen. No matter our limitations and customs.

As tiny as can be, or as expansive we may have the chance to get it, having direct access to heat, water and supplies as we rotate, within one continuous stroke motion, is what defines a well functioning space. It is the base to build on the perfectly inclusive universal design kitchen. A room where size and space are utilized to their greatest extend. Where daily use is thoroughly thought so that every corner is functioning at full capacity. Where finishes work hard to allow us to work effortlessly. We are welcoming today the first day of Spring. The season of hope, where just about everything is possible. So let’s welcome Spring with a loud Hello ! and get a head start on those projects we have been hatching all Winter long.

Assess The Outdoor Living Spaces.

Whether we are gifted with a living space right in our backyard or whether there is a public spot we call our very own, with HRM many public parks and green spaces we all have the ability to have a place outside of home that makes us feel good and connected to nature.

Now is the perfect moment to spend a little time walking the grounds of our heaven. Taking pictures, assessing light, ground conditions… Checking out what we have to work with, and without.

Plan The Dream Escape.

With this useful information on hands, we take a good old pencil and start putting on paper what we had envisioned. Sharing our ideas with the rest to broaden our horizon. Or keeping it to ourselves if this is something we would rather keep quiet until the reveal time.

Taking in all those thoughts we built over the last few months, it is now time to be practical and plan on how we can make our dream space happen.

Tackle The Logistics.

We set a thorough list of supplies needed, if any, and set a plan to tackle the work that has to be done to make the space just perfect.

At this stage, it is important to be hopeful but realistic. If the work involved implies heavy machinery, building permits or substantial financial investments and our wallet is not that healthy at the present time, or if we do not have much time on our hands to synchronize the project, then settling for a more humble approach will go a long way in avoiding deception at the end and will relieve pressure all along the elaboration of the said project.

Roll Up Your Sleeves And Get Dirty !

Even if it is still really early and we will probably get a couple more snow events before long, we can start cleaning up right away the area we will be improving. It will make for a lighter task later on when we are eager to get planting.

Removing dead branches, picking up items that had flown in during winter storms etc… Putting in the efforts will be key to truly connect with the space and make it reflect our personality. Even if we cannot do all the work on our own depending on the amount involved. But taking part in the process is important in the overall delivery of our dream space.

Plan For Better Accessibility.

Plan the space by keeping key concepts in mind and based on past experiences. Starting with accessibility. Putting the space into perspective within our lifestyle.

Was the outdoors space difficult to access after a heavy rain ? Think about creating a mineral path with slight elevation. Gravel, patio stones, poured concrete… Whatever will work best for the space and budget, so that the area can be fully enjoyed no matter what weather is in store. Was it inconvenient to come back inside with gardening tools and muddy boots ? Create an outdoors landing with a readily accessible hose and racks to accommodate all the attire. It will make for a smoother transition between the outdoors fun area and indoors. Was the patio too hot on sunny days ? Consider incorporating a built-in pergola or installing a roll out screen to create the perfect spot to soak in the fresh breeze on hot Summer days.

Think Durability.

Integrate more plants this year into the design and turn the outdoors into a sustainable wildlife heaven.

Choose perennials or self-sowing annuals that will basically have the same end results. This will account for less maintenance, less time and resources invested and therefore more hours on hand to fully enjoy the space. Introduce colorful flowers that will server double purpose. An eye candy for you and a substantial treat for our pollinators. Bring some shrubs and trees where possible for rain management and visual balance. Plan wisely : consider the proximity to erected structures and take into account the growth of the species over the years.

Bring In Mindfulness.

Introduce key elements to make the space a mindful escape. Consider a visit to your outdoors special place a journey to embark on. Include unique elements to connect with your environment.

Bring in a pond or a fountain for the ambiance. Even a bowl filled with water. Seriously. Even introduced scarcely, the element of water is beneficial to our well-being. Looking at a water body is lively, peaceful and greatly helps our balance and happiness. Have textured plants in a great variety of hues to extend the interest to the other seasons. And to look forward to the rebirth of various species at different times throughout the year. Space permitting, plant trees. Their benefits on the human mental wellness and our planet’s well-being is well proven and deserves to be promoted and enjoyed.

With warm days only beginning, we are way ahead of time to set up a successful garden escape. So let’s get started with enthusiasm and lots of bright ideas to welcome together the planting season with a loud Hello Spring !

Furnishing Accessible Bedrooms.

Bedroom are our safe place. Where we can rest and recharge. No matter what the size, it should have that soothing effect that will make sure we feel relaxed. Big bright rooms, humble spaces, the design elements are here to reflect us. But when it comes to furnishing accessible bedrooms, less is totally more.

We already covered lighting, and pathways. But let’s not forget that good bed linens will make us feel welcome too. Sweet caresses to trigger our sleep. And there is actually not much to add to a bedroom for it to function to its greatest capacities.

Storage Capacity.

A closet is always a plus. Storage over and over again. It should be accessible and well organized with a variety of shelves at the appropriate height according to needs. Of course, it is okay to have some at a different height to store items that are not used everyday. Since we do have to store quite a variety of articles in our four seasons Maritime weather, we have to keep in mind our wardrobe is more extended that the strict necessary. But we should also exercise good judgement in keeping our wardrobe to the best functioning capacity.

Standing Right By Your Side.

A floating nightstand gets my vote anytime, preferably with rounded edges. A wall mounted shelf for example. It greatly facilitates cleaning day after day. Furnishing accessible bedrooms should focus on easy maintenance too. Once again a floor free of area rugs is a great asset as it is much simpler to clean on a regular basis. And not more tripping hazard !

To go back to our nightstand, a humble size will discourage us from overfilling the top, which makes it harder to find our essentials. And we do not need that much space by our side at night anyway. Most medication should be kept in a central location, not necessarily in the bedroom. Lamps should be fixed to the walls where possible. And all we really need on the nightstand should basically sum up in a good book, a handkerchief, a bottle of water and a telephone.

Yes, a telephone. Although it is greatly encouraged to keep all electronic devices out of the bedroom, a telephone is actually a necessity for any emergencies that could arise in the middle of the night. So a charged telephone by the bed is a must. And no, no charging station necessary. Devices should not be charged overnight anyway since it does alter the battery life over time. Plus the controversial emissions that arise during sleeping hours should not be totally dismissed, no matter what is our position on the subject.

Time to Turn Off The Light.

We should make sure we can actually block all the lights from inside the room, including the telephone’s pilot. Even the tiniest will have an impact on the quality and soundness of our sleep. So let’s cover our telephone with a light blocking fixture that not only will completely darken any reminiscent light but will also block any potential harmful radiation.

Maintaining Good Habits.

We should make sure the bed will be easy to make so it can be done more often. Nothing compares to going to sleep in fresh linens. Nothing like the crisp yet cozy feel of sheets thoroughly washed and dried on the line in our coastal breeze. And this is without stating the importance of good hygiene habits to keep in our lifestyle, no matter what physical or mental restriction we can experience at any given time.

When it comes to renovating our homes, we should plan our design ahead and take an honest look at our living habits before making drastic changes. Universal design renovations have the benefits of relying on foolproof concepts that do not get old. They rather help us age within our own spaces. They help us improve our comfort and overall enjoyment of life.

Assessing Our Real Estate.

Resale value is great to keep in mind generally speaking. But, ultimately, we are the ones currently living in the space and nothing—and nobody—can guarantee that a client-oriented resale renovation would be a good investment may one day we decide to put the property on the market.

That being said, even if we already know we will be selling, the next homeowner of the dwelling might very well have the same needs we currently have. There is a long list of universal wishes that are sure to appeal to anyone. And work for any lifestyle. New Year has come, bringing closure to a strenuous past year. Although 2022 was satisfying to write down, pretty much each and every one of the last 12 months brought its share of challenges. And ending this chapter gives us hope for a happy New Year 2023.

We acknowledge that today does not mark the New Year for all of our communities here in Nova Scotia. And we will be ready to vow again our best wishes when time comes for our many cultures to celebrate their own new beginnings. But for those who are taking this opportunity to look ahead on this first day of January, we would like to share what we, at Islands to Cottages, are wishing for this upcoming new year. So here goes. Star light, Star bright, we wish we may, we wish we might, have all the wishes we wish tonight :

1. Environmental Awareness.

We wish for more efforts to be made province-wide to bring awareness on the issues our environment is facing right here, in Nova Scotia.

Why. Sustainability is a global topic that requires every country to take part in. But change starts right here, at our doorstep. We need to promote education with persistent messages sent to our population. We need to make improvements now. Within our own communities. So we can extend those benefits day by day and spread them worldwide.

The will. To set an example and pride ourselves of how well we care for this gorgeous land we call home.

2. Protecting Our Natural Resources.

We wish for stricter rules governing management and protection of our natural resources.

Why. We have to learn from the mistakes made in the past, in our own backyard and globally too. We need to fix decades of abuse to our lands and waters. But we also need to make sure we protect what can still be saved. Light must be shed on disturbing environmental practices affecting our ecosystems and shameless trades draining our precious resources for alarming profits.

The will. To see an active plan and enforcement in effect to protect our lands and waters, our fauna and flora in their entirety.

3. Smart Manufacturing Standards.

We wish for better laws implemented worldwide about manufacturing standards.

Why. We need strict guidelines to produce systems that make sense mechanically so they can be repaired easily. With parts that are standards and interchangeable from one brand to the other. With repairability scores and tight regulations.

The will. To improve inadequate consumption habits by making better sense of what is manufactured globally.

4. More Accessibility.

We wish for more accessible parks and facilities all over Nova Scotia.

Why. All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. But not all of us are given that equal access to dignity and rights. We do not all have the same freedom of movement, freedom of speech or cognitive freedom. It is time to take a stand and improve our accessibility level province-wide to be more inclusive.

The will. To open the conversation, get to work and make a difference to regain leadership of our human rights.  

5. Promoting Our First Languages.

We wish for better access to more content in Mi’kmaq and French.

Why. We need to foster our roots so we can grow tall and strong. By valuing our heritage and past history we strengthen our ability to welcome the future. Nova Scotia is growing fast and branching out widely. We need to set ourselves for success to embrace that change.

The will. To have more Federal and provincial support to enhance and promote resources available in Mi’kmaq and French.

6. Welcoming Diversity.

We wish for acceptance and openness to our diverseness.

Why. Nova Scotia’s future is multicultural and multiethnic, rich and diverse. We have such prodigious potential and our dynamics are quickly changing. It is important to remind ourselves that it is not enough to read and learn about inclusivity. We need to act inclusively and respect the fact that we all come from different backgrounds, culturally and socially, with different values and views.

The will. To feel more understanding of our amazing diversity.

7. Domestic Awareness Programs.

We wish for the introduction of awareness courses in all high schools across the province about the basics of adulthood.

Why. Many adults do not have sufficient knowledge of the essentials required to properly function within our society. The result ? They become overly dependent of their partner and a way out gets too complicated in case of a difficult relationship.

The will. To have a mandatory curriculum in place about the realities and requirements to live independently. Dealing with all aspects of life such as accommodations, finances, healthcare, communications, work, digital privacy, etc.

8. Cell Phones Regulations.

We wish for mandatory devices creating interference within our own cars to prevent cell phones from functioning once the engine is on.

Why. Cell phone use behind the wheel has redefine driving to unprecedented brainlessness. From erratic behavior to swinging in and out the driving lanes, last minute exits to unexpected pace changes, driving distracted by cell phones is unacceptable and unnecessary.

The will. That common sense prevails and cell phones use be banned while driving.

9. Access To Public Washrooms.

We wish for more public washrooms accessible all year long across the province.

Why. We all love to wander and explore our very own Ocean Playground. But when we have to go, we have to go. And it is not always possible, especially off season. For anyone ranging from young families to members of our aging population, the reality is that we need to have readily access to public restrooms at all times for basics needs and peace of mind.

The will. To have a better access to public facilities for all to enjoy on highly needed bathroom breaks. 

10. Increased Visibility.

We wish that everyone wears bright color apparel and/or luminous and reflective devices to be seen when walking at night or in poor weather conditions.

Why. No matter what we think, we cannot assume that others will be able to see us. The safest way to go is to do our best to be seen, loud and clear. Otherwise we could lose big : we could actually lose it all, that simple. With only one life to hang on to, that’s really not much to spare…

The will. Dress smart, dress bright, dress for life.

Above all, we need to make sure the space fits our needs. Even thought it is mostly used for short periods of time, laundry rooms have to be well thought for daily use. The space has to be functional. Yet it does not have to be too roomy either, but this depends on our family habits and overall dynamics at home.

Organizing The Space.

We may want to have a folding or ironing table in there. Maybe a drying rack for the delicate items ? Those can be easily found retractable or foldable which means that, once the job is done, the device can go back on the wall and leave more clearance inside the room. Great solution for tight spaces. However, for those of us who have a lot of delicate items, and go through laundry cycles every day, a dedicated and permanent fixture will make a lot more sense. All without having to lose some precious minutes setting up and down the said fixture.

Having wall-mounted shelves to accommodate laundry products is a smart move too. We can use those to store folded linen as well once they have been cleaned and dried. We very well might want to turn some of those shelves into a permanent linen “closet” where we can stack bed and table ware. Skipping the step of transferring garments from laundry room to linen closet to dining room or wherever else it might be makes perfect sense since it saves us one task on those weekly chores.

Washers And Dryers.

If the space is tight, we can always invest in a stackable set of washer and dryer. There are many options on the market nowadays and it is a great idea to splurge on this when possible. This will also ease the transfer from washer to dryer, going up-to-down is much easier than transferring side-to-side. Just saying. However, if we are currently in a traditional side-by-side setting and considering switching for a stackable set, it is good to keep in mind that, if we like to use the flat surface above the machines as work surface, this will no longer be an option. The height will simply be too great to be used comfortably. And we will likely have to think about setting up another station to use for folding or organizing laundry.

Still speaking of height, if we rather keep the side-by-side configuration, then investing in a washer and dryer pedestal is a great option. Yes, they are quite pricey. And if you can build one yourself it is even better. But regardless if you buy or build, this clever add-on will greatly improve comfort. Especially for those of us experiencing back issues. It will make laundry duty much more enjoyable since we do not have to bend as low. Although the same goes for the now un-workable surface above the washer and dryer, as the new height of the top will have to be taken into account, once again.

When investing in new appliances, dryers and washers should be energy efficient for great cleaning abilities at the lowest running cost. Front load washers are the best in this department, hands down. As for dryers ? Nothing beats the clothesline ! Yep, even in Winter. And even in our Nova Scotia weather. Not saying that we can always depend on it, but it is still the best option we can choose sustainability-wise, financially and for the experience. Oooh the smell and feel of coastal wind-dried linen…

Mindful Laundry Duty.

Speaking of experience and enjoying the laundry chore, the most important part of having smart laundry rooms is to make the space enjoyable. We should use an organizing system that works for the space. And for us. Make sure it looks tidy and can stay tidy in the long run. We should use colors that will make us enter the room feeling happy. We can use handcrafted tiles on the floor to bring a sense of luxury to the room. After all, not all jewels have to be worn ! They can be found in other unexpected forms and do not have to cost an arm and a leg either.

As for the logistics, when possible try to install a laundry tub—a glorified sink really—. It is so helpful to have that extra spot for utility purposes. And rest assured that you will find more use for it than you ever expected !

Location, Location, Location.

Last but not least, whenever feasible, we should consider moving the laundry room on the bedrooms’ floor. Living in a bungalow ? Everything is on the same level. Problem solved. Multiple story dwellings ? Well, having the laundry room on the same level as the bedrooms will save some valuable time—and efforts—in bringing up and down all that linen. Kitchen and dining linen do not account for as much as clothes and bed linen. So if this is an option, moving the entire space altogether is definitely a great decision. Not possible ? Then we should at least install a chute from the bathroom to the laundry room. It is super efficient. And so much fun too ! And yes, given the very nature of those two spaces—the requirement for plumbing—they are often located one above the other so, all good there !

Smart laundry rooms are a must for efficient design within our space. They are a fantastic place where to introduce a more sustainable lifestyle as well. And not only they can make our daily living easier, but they can also be revamped in attractive ways to really boost our spirits for chores that could otherwise feel a little heavy at times on our routine. Hooks, hooks, hooks and more hooks ! If introducing closets to our space for additional storage is not possible or will lose too much valuable square footage then we should go for a rack of hooks. Organizing with hooks is a simple project that will make a world of difference in our everyday.

Hooks are a true organizing gem for any area. Closets may be clever but they do require to take some of our floor space. Bedrooms are meant to be a place to sleep, so lighting should be… light, right ? Well yes, but there is much more to it than the flip of a switch. It’s time we shed some light on our bedroom walls and address the topic of bedroom lighting.

Diversity Is Key.

To say the truth, the bedroom should be flooded with a great variety of lights. Not the bright in-your-face type but rather the glowing yellow kind. The one that will emit a good strong ray without depriving us of our sleep once we turn it on for a few minutes.

We should also account for how much light we really want to have. How bright the room should be. Enough for a good read… But not too much either, not to disturb our sleeping hormones before bedtime or in the middle of the night when we have to get up.

Easy Does it.

Turning it on has to be easy and quick. We should think forward and avoid lamps with awkward switch buttons. Some are literally painful to operate, it just does not make sense. It does not make sense for today, when we are still able and willing. And it certainly does not make sense for tomorrow when we might have a little less flexibility in the fingers. We should consider having the technology come to the rescue here and invest in a sensory lamp if we can. A touch sensitive light is a fantastic option since we do not have to look for any interrupter in the middle of the night. Just touch the lamp, et voilà ! And last but not least, we might want to avoid at any cost motion sensor lights inside the bedroom, unless we want to be disrupted any time we will be tossing and turning. A great recipe for a sleepless night but really… Not the best idea.

Invest In Quality.

Like anything around the house, we should go for low maintenance and easy care. We should spend the right amount of money for a good quality lamp. Leaning towards timeless fixtures that will not go out of style anytime soon. They can always be spiced up with some carefully chosen accessories—like home jewelry—to highlight the season or the celebration we are approaching.

Selecting a device that accepts LED bulbs is key, we bear sustainability in mind as always. Those bulbs last a very long time too, so we cut down on the amount of time we will have to change them. Speaking of which, first and foremost we need to look at how easy it is to change the said light bulb. Because no matter what, those bulbs are not going to change themselves when they fail. And some systems make it so ridiculously complicated to perform such a simple task.
