Organizing With Hooks

Two black iron hooks are set on a white wall, holding a weaved basket and a wide-brimmed Australian outback hat in light color.

Hooks, hooks, hooks and more hooks ! If introducing closets to our space for additional storage is not possible or will lose too much valuable square footage then we should go for a rack of hooks. Organizing with hooks is a simple project that will make a world of difference in our everyday.

Hooks are a true organizing gem for any area. Closets may be clever but they do require to take some of our floor space. Which is valuable space that can be very much needed in some areas, especially in smaller homes. Installing a hook rack system on a wall instead can serve multipurpose function, with no downside.

Hooks also have the upside to be terribly efficient and easy to use for daily operations. We can hang anything from towels to jackets to robes and hats. And just as well we can pick them up in the flashest of the flashes.

Hooks to Catch our Glance.

Not sure if the look is right for us ? Well, time to cut loose and use our quirkiness for the best. When time comes to choose our design, let’s go big and go home. Hooks should be styled, just so that it complements our décor. A smaller scale rack would have a tendency to look like a last minute temporary addition before getting the forever item. It might also make the space look unfinished and will bring a sense of un-accomplishment. And that would go against the overall idea of finishing our space for good so we can take that weigh off our shoulder. So organizing with hooks should not feel like an afterthought. But rather like a custom item. A design element. The center of the attention.

We can also set a feature wall. A wall-to-wall display of handcrafted hooks will put the emphasis on the articles themselves and serve as a gallery. What about displaying precious items ? A collection of scarves or hats or even jewellery that would otherwise be hidden in a closet makes a fantastic backdrop to any decor.

Grab-on Practicality.

We can set simple over-the-door hanger racks in any room, over any door. They are a breeze to install and will make a world of difference as soon as they are up. Facing inside the room, they are almost unnoticeable from the other side. A great variety of styles can be found nowadays. We should pick hooks that speak to us. Handmade pieces from local artisans, vintage or even big bucks stores finds that will make us happy.

But we should also make sure they are easy to use and not dangerous. Avoiding types that are too narrow or too weak to handle a certain amount of weight. The key is to think ahead : winters coats, backpacks, etc.

Reaching New Heights.

When installing a rack of hooks on the wall, we have to make sure they are set at a height that will be accessible for everyone in the family. But also be safe so no one gets poked in the eye every time passing by… Especially if your design calls for a hook a little more protuberant. Ouch ! So opting for hooks with a round finish whenever possible is definitely a go-to.

Setting different types of hooks at different heights will greatly help the way they function for the whole family. And it will transform a cluttered floor into a neat entryway in the matter of seconds.

Organizing with hooks is a great, affordable way to prep our house for easy everyday living. It allows us to be more efficient all around the house. And to make our space work to its best ability, all in line with universal design.
