Sustainable Closets

Published by islandstocottages on

A natural brown cardboard box is set on a white table with clothing items visible from the outside. A green plant is set beside, in a terra cotta planter.

That’s it ! With Spring fast approaching (in 41 days !) we are all set and ready to commit to a greener future. So for our next cleaning spree, we clear out all the clutter from closets and cupboards to only keep the bare essentials in. With sustainable closets ready to go, we will find ourselves lightened, both physically and mentally. And that will save us a ton of time as we won’t have to lose any more precious minutes looking for our daily essentials.

The Way To Declutter.

Now how do we get there? The best method is to place all of our accessories in a box, organized by rooms. Kitchen gadgets, office stationery, craft items, even wearable articles. And there go the duly marked boxes, in a storage room or far down in the basement, if we have one. In a storage room ? But wasn’t it supposed to be the goal, to clear up the storage spaces ? Well, step by step and all will eventually fall into place…

So we have our boxes, hidden away from sight. Now when we actually need an article that has been put aside, we resist the temptation to go pick it up and let it go for the first time. We don’t touch anything. If the need arises again, we make the effort to get the item from the box and put it back in the room where it belongs. Where it clearly deserves to stay.

After 3 months, we take inventory of our boxes and part with them. Sentimental items will go to family and friends. Unremarkable but good quality items will go to donations. Only unusable items that no longer justify their place in our space, or in any space for that matter, will go to recycling or trash depending on their material.

Double Benefits.

This super easy method of decluttering supports our goals both in the mindfulness and sustainability department. By reducing our inventory, we save ourselves daily frustration and improve the efficiency of our space so that we can enjoy it more. But by taking inventory of how many items fill our boxes after three months, we can sensibly realize the unnecessary accumulation of things in our lives. This tends to encourage us to reduce our desire to reinvest in this same type of superfluous articles. And thus we can avoid taking an active part in unnecessary over consumption of items that are non-essential to our daily lives. It also puts into perspective our need to accumulate things and develops our humility in view of our dependency on accessory items.

We will probably be surprised by the results of this cleaning experience which will almost certainly make us revisit more than one room in our space…
